Commission to Ellis de Sutton to enquire by a Yorkshire jury William son of Thomas le Marescall (Mareshall 7m ing.) of Karleton Roger Dene of Routheclive (Rouclyve in ing.) in self defence. 20 February 14 Edward I. [1286.] Inquisition Wednesday before Palm Sunday 14 Edward I [4 April 1286] : William was going one day from Seleby to Karleton and passing through wood, he saw Roger cutting wood, of which he had made him a great William rebuked him, saying that if the woodward saw him he take a gage of him and make him go away. Roger replied that even if were the woodward he would not leave off what he was doing for And thereupon he drew out of the bundle he had made a pick-axe ad pike) and wounded William once in the shoulder (in scapula). William back (subtrawit se) to avoid more, pursued by Roger, who wounded him the head and in the chest. He then drew back further, but looking round a great ditch full of water behind him ; so he drew his sword and struck on the head, so that he fell, and so went away.
