The rolls on the map

Every place the calendars name that we have been able to locate — where letters were sealed and the people, manors and religious houses they concern. Circles are sized by how often a place appears; monastic houses, cathedrals and hospitals are drawn apart. Click any point for its page.

A located sample, not a gazetteer. Only places with coordinates are plotted. Coordinates come from the OS gazetteer, the printed indexes and (newly) Wikidata; low-confidence matches can be hidden below.

Religious houses are identified by name (Abbey, Priory, Minster, Friars, Nunnery, Hospital, Preceptory) and, where a coordinate came from Wikidata, by its description (so "Oseney" or "Spalding" — houses the corpus names only by their place — are caught too). See method.
