Commission to Walter de Hopton and John son of Aer to enquire Geoffrey le Jofne of Bureford, imprisoned at Shrewsbury, killed de Bureford in self defence. Baladenthlyn. 15 June 12 Edward I. Inquisition at Shrewsbury Wednesday after SS. Peter and Paul Edward I [5 July 1284] by Adam de Elmerugge and Henry le Waleys, and others named : Geoffrey de Burford, portionary of the church Burford, sent William Sklesi his servant to dig the ground of Geoffrey le of Burford in order to clear his own land of standing water. Geoffrey Gevene seeing another man digging his land came up and demanded his gage (vadiwm), and took an iron bound shovel (trubulam). William went home and told his master that he had been put to gage (devadiatum). Geoffrey, the portionary, being moved to anger, went in person and dug the land of Geoffrey le Gevene as his servant had done, and the said Geoffrey and demanded his gage, which he refused (vetuit), and being angry about previous putting to gage, ran at Geoffrey with an iron shod shovel and him on the neck, bringing him to his knees ; he then struck him again the arm so that he fled into the corner of a ditch. And there, seeing he like to be killed, Geoffrey le Gevene picked up a spade (bechiam) which found lying in the ditch and struck Geoffrey on the head, so that, after three weeks and five days, he died.
