Writ to the sheriff of Salop. Shrewsbury. 16 December I. [1283.] By chancellor. in full county. Thursday after St. Valentine 12 Edward I 1284]: Hugh son of Walter de Scheynton and Nicholas Dug came from Wenlok towards Caleweton and when they came to called Wepintecros outside the town of Wenlok they quarrelled and struck Hugh on the head with a stick. Hugh cried out and ran back Wenlok, begging the king's peace ; but Nicholas kept on pursuing beating him till they came to the town-head of Wenlok, where he him on the forehead so that he fell. So Hugh seeing that he was likely drew his sword and struck Nicholas on the head, from which died after fifteen days. Hugh killed Nicholas in self-defence. Cf.
