Writ to the sheriff of York to enquire into the slaying of John de Acton Burnel. 8 October 11 Edward I. [1283.] [Cf. Ancient 14776. ] before the sheriff and coroners : On Saturday after Ascension Edward I [9 May 1282] a shepherd (bercarius) called Richard Fox of (Hdbristonia) announced to Alan son of John, Laurence de Neuton Blank, then foresters of Pyker[ing] that there were robbers in a place called Bykkele trying to steal his goods. The foresters ran thither a robber called John de Kukewald (or Cukewald) and another Richard de Suthfeld. They summoned John to come to the king's he refused, and shot an arrow and nearly killed one of the foresters. him to be a robber they pursued him and wounded him as he had him beheaded (decolare fecerunt) by Richard de Suthfeld according custom of Blachou moor, and sent the head to Pykering Castle. John horses, oxen and cows, sheep and goats and many other things.
