Writ to the sheriff of Northumberland. York. 10 January I. [1284.] By W. de Hamelton. at Newcastle Thursday before St. Peter's Chair. 12 Edward I 1284] before Thomas de Diveleston, sheriff, and the coroner : son of William de Quictonstal (Whittonstalle in writ), now in prison was going home to his house in Quictonstal thinking no evil, when (Turney in writ) came after him with a big stick, trying to kill came between him and his own door. And as he could not otherwise with his life, since John followed him from place to place, he shot an arrow so that he died. He did not kill him of malice aforethought. de odio et atia was issued in the same case, at Caernarvon 12 Edward I, and an inquisition taken at Newcastle Thursday before at the Latin gate in the same year [i.e.4 May 1284] with a verdict of in self-defence. To this is attached the following warrant. breve juxta inquisicionem presentibus interclusam quod ponatur per usque ad iter justiciarum et licet aliqui petant plus debito et extra formam colore mandati nostri non ideo magis facias eisdem.
