June 35, Inquisition

Writ to the sheriff and coroners of Worcester to enquire who killed de Hales in the wood of Trumpeleye. Wodestok. 21 April Edward I. [1281.] Inquisition : The jurors understand that William son of Henry Snel of and others unknown are guilty of Thomas's death. This verdict being insufficient, the sheriff and coroners enquired further twelve foreign jurors and by the townships of two hundreds together and that Henry Snel, William his son, Thomas Smelvowe of Kyderministr John son of Roger Sugge of the same were present at the killing of Thomas, whom Henry, Thomas and John have been taken and imprisoned. Richard Stone of Wulvardeleg , William his son, and John atte Lowe of the same been imprisoned on suspicion. Thomas was murdered for the money which had with him, it is unknown by whose procurement. The evil-doers carried all his goods and chattels except his horse which was found in the keeping SUPPLEMENT. 601 atte Lowe, and except a sack of white pease which was brought to of Laurence de Becco by his servants and without his knowledge. [1281.] taken Monday before Martinmas 9 Edward I [10 November 1281] : Chinnok of Little Yarmouth was beyond the seas, viz. in Normandy the writ of appeal of robbery and breach of the peace was procured him by Thomas de Carleton, nor was he guilty of the said robbery.
