Writ of privy seal to Walter de Gloucestre, escheator south of Berkhamstede. 11 April 30 Edward I. [1302.] French. Inquisition. in the great court of St. Edmund s. Thursday in Easter week. Henry de Hastinggis, father, and Henry de Hastinggis, grandfather of Hastinggis, and their ancestors held in their time the stewardship of the of St. Edmund's in fee, as well when there was an abbot of St. Edmund's during voidance, taking at every great court of St. Edmund's a mark, the steward held the court personally, from the abbot, by the hands of his unless the abbot was in the town of St. Edmund's or in the manors Elmiswelle, Chevyngton and Coleforde, on the day of holding the court. If the abbot is not in the said town, and is in any of the said manors, after the court, the steward will go to the manor, where the abbot is, with horses and 13 men, and will take for himself a seam of oats with sufficient a sextary of wine, 16 gallons of ale, 24 wax candles in winter and 12 in 8 loaves for his greyhounds and 2 hens for his falcons. The steward with his men will have fair entertainment on that day in food drink, MISCELLANEOUS 513 steward goes to the county court at Ipswich, or elsewhere, on the he will take from the abbot suitable expenses, and every horse shoes a mark and 10s. for his servants. the said Henry de Hastinggis and his ancestors were wont to take, to have, their reasonable expenses in making yearly the proffers at the Exchequer. Hastinggis, son and heir of the said Henry, ought to hold the said to himself and his heirs for ever, taking all the said fee, if he the office in person, but, if he perform the same by deputy, such take a moiety of the fee and his reasonable expenses. last voidance of the abbey, by the death of Simon, then abbot, the de Hastinggis was under age and his lands were in the king's hand keeping of the earl of Cornwall by the king's demise, wherefore nothing by his own hands, but Jordan de Sakevile, then deputy, a moiety of the said fee. Transcripts (1) of an inquisition before Peter de Leycestre taken Derby on Monday in the feast of St. Gregory 30 Edward I [1302], finding the pasture of Fairfeld in the Peak was at one time rented at 19 marks be paid yearly to the king by his tenants of Wormhull and a mark to the of the Peak for carrying the said 19 marks to the king ; the tenants 40s. to the bailiff of High Peak for a turbary there ; the king can commit said pasture for approvement, if he will, but it would be to the prejudice his hunting and the damage of the said tenants ; (2) of a petition in French the said Peter from the tenants of Wormehull, Hulle, Herdewykewalle, Greterakes, Meden, Feyrfelt, Wolfelowe and Steverdale against approvement ; (3) a similar petition from the foresters and verderers Peak Forest; (4) a memorandum that afterwards on Thursday in Easter the said Peter came to Nottingham, and Thomas de Folejaumbe and other jurors delivered to him an extent made at Fayrfeld on Wednesday the Annunciation showing that the said pasture contains 1,500 acres, would be of the yearly value of 6d. an acre, and for ingress 2s. an acre the king wishes to approve the same ; the township of Wormehull pays 19 marks to the castle of the Peak ; the king can approve the pasture, he will, but to the destruction of the hunting of his forest of Campania.
