Hirde, sometime shepherd of the abbot of Pipewell, at his grange acquired 8 acres of land there, of which sixteen years past he the abbot and convent of Pipewell in return for maintenance for life clothing. 16 years past enfeoffed the said abbot and convent of half land in Quappelode with common of a bovate of land in the same The said abbot and convent had full seisin at the time C. Ing. Misc. File 50. (14) Writ to the sheriff of Cumberland. Norham. 18 May 19 Edward I. before Sirs Michael de Harcla and John de Swinburn. Saturday of St. Peter and St. Paul. ; predecessors of the present bishop of Carlisle had a stank in the Eden, near Scoteby, but Ralph, the present bishop, has much and strengthened it, and in part heightened it. Ralph, when the water of Eden carries away the sure and dry side of Scoteby, which is the king's soil, follows up with his stank INQUISITIONS anew to the dry land, as his predecessors did, by what warrant the jurors ignorant. There is no nuisance, except that the more the stank is amended more the fisheries above are deteriorated, the more so as the said bishop raised an engine called a bayne in the stream in the middle of the stank taking fish, and his predecessors had only baskets made of rods. The said bishop hinders the tenants of Scoteby from fishing in the water Eden, who ought to fish there of right, unless excluded by the king's special because all the free tenants have free fishery so far as their soil goes.
