Writ (mutilated). Inquisition before Henry de Shotesbroke, under-sheriff of Stephen de Eddeworthe. Cheppeham. Monday after the close of Easter. [1271.] On the 15 October 54 Henry III, William Giffard held of the land late of Ralph de Pinkeny in Little Sharston in demesne 96 acres of land worth 24s. ; six acres worth 12s. ; easements of the courtyard with profits of the garden, 3s. half a water-mill, 5s. ; rents of assize of freemen, 18s. 24d. ; customary work of MISCELLANEOUS 131 in winter, 14d.; rent of assize in pepper, 1/b., worth 8d.; 2lbs. [1271.] showing that a hundred acres (i.e. 110) of the said land, which would be worth if brought into cultivation, 73s. 4d. at 8d. and 28 acres of meadow at 5s. per acre are worth 6/. 17s.(sic) ; 10s. 4d. Stephen de Penecestre and his fellows appointed to enquire by a jury of those who adhered to the king and his eldest son during the disturbances whether Thomas de Hegham side or not, and whether Bartholomew de Moristone took any of the goods. The sheriff is directed to find a jury, and to release for 110 marks taken of the said Bartholomew till further orders king or the said Stephen. Thursday after the disturbances, the said Thomas was against the king and his Edward at Rochester castle, and maintained a cross-bowman William Graland at his own cost for the attack of that castle all the the earl of Leicester lay before it. Also the said Thomas received at Godwyneston Robert le Ferrur of London and Eylwyn his who were against the king at the battle of Lewes. For these causes de Thedemerse, who was keeper of Tunebrege castle after the battle for Sir Edward and the earl of Gloucester, had the goods of the seized ; and by his orders the said Sir Bartholomew took of goods 40 quarters of barley worth 100s., 4 pigs worth 12s., 15 little worth 2s. 6d., 34 geese worth 5s. 8d., 12 cocks (coppas) of vetches and an empty cart worth 18d.; total 6/. 4s. 8d. These the said kept for his own use. some persons unknown from the garrison (garnistura) of Tunebrege the house of the said Thomas and took to Tunebrege castle nine twelve lambs worth 4/. 16s., 25 pigs worth 50s., and 25 smaller pigs worth 25s. Writ to Simon de Creye and his fellows, justices of oyer and in Sussex for pleas of lands transferred by reason of the disturbances, of the redemption due by Matthew de Knolle under the dictum Westminster. 30 January 55 Henry III. [1271.] : Ad instanciam Roberti Aguyllon. The said Matthew did not appear before the said justices at when summoned. It was found by inquisition that he was of the of the earl of Leicester, and was at Rochester with horses and the castle in defiance of the king, till the army was driven away Edward. Also the said Matthew bore his own charges and those of man against the king at Pevenese, and left his servant there after he Also he was against the king at other times, but whether of his the jurors could not say. INQUISITIONS Writ to John de Oketon and John de Reygate to enquire into the of the canons of the church of St. Mary at Southwell to have the same as the dean and chapter of St. Peter at York. Westminster. 2 July Henry III. [1271.] Saturday the morrow of St. Mary Magdalen Henry IIT. The justices itinerant come to the door of the church of South- (Swellie) and there hold all pleas touching the liberties of the said church ; they hold pleas of the crown within the said liberties in the house of one the canons; and they amerce the tenants of the said liberties according their delinquencies, the amercements going to the king. In the time of de Grey, late archbishop of York, the bailiffs of the king used not to the said liberty to levy amercements unless by default of the bailiffs the said liberty ; but since then they have often done so for that cause. canons of the said church have a charter of Henry IT, and one of the present similar to that granted to the church of St. Peter at York; but they have no liberties save those above specified. Sir Roger de Clifford the elder disseised Margaret de Clifford of the manor Culmetone on St. James's day, 49 Henry III [25 July, 1265], and held it Midsummer 54 Henry IIT [1270]. Afterwards Walter de Walford who the said manor from the said Roger before the justices itinerant Gloucestershire held it for two days, and then enfeoffed Sir Roger de Clifford younger thereof. which Roger held it till the Decollation of St. John the 55 Henry III [28 August, 1271], when the said Margaret recovered it an assize of novel disseisin taken before Walter de Helyoun. The said Roger Clifford the elder took the esplees of the said manor all the time it was in hands ; and the manor is extended at 14/. 19s. 9d. The said Roger received pasture in the park 1 mark; from the park, 50/.; from the men of manor as an aid. 20s. The said Walter during his time took 12d. The houses held son of Hake of Worcester and his brothers do not escheat to the the death of the said Hake, because the said Hake never bought nor but Aaron and his brothers bought them from Christians, who them thereof. It is stated on behalf of William the abbot of Torre, the prior of Totnes (J ottonie), and their men of that although Kynkeswere is neither a city, a borough, nor a town, Walter de Burges, who was sent to those parts to test weights in cities, boroughs, and market towns, amerced the said of Kynkeswere in the sum of 100s. because the inhabitants did not their measures, and procured that that amercement should be by summons of the wardrobe.
