Writ to Stephen de ences to enquire, the justices itinerant having failed to do so. Westminster. 22 August 55 Henry III. [1271.] Inquisition before Stephen de Penecestre, constable of Dover. After the death of John son of Bernard, a tenant in chief of the king his son Ralph (called Ralph son of Bernard) became a ward of the king, who granted the marriage of the said Ralph to Sir Robert de Cocfeud, and the wardship of his lands to Sir Imbert Pugeys ; and after the death of the said Imbert, his executors, Geoffrey de Haspale and Sir John le Bretoun, knight, had the wards ship of the said lands to carry out Imbert s will; and while the manor of Kyngesdoune was in their hands, four robbers escaped from the prison there ; but the said Ralph did not hold his lands till a year and a half afterwards, so that not he but the said executors or Sir Robert Pogeys son and heir of Imbert are responsible for the said escape.
