Commission to Geoffrey le Scrope, Robert de Cliderhou, William de Tatham and John de Lancastre to enquire and certify the king touching a petition of his tenants of Boweland showing that Richard de Spaldyngton, late keeper of his free chace of Boweland in the counties of York and Lancaster, while in the tenure of queen Isabella, felled and sold 200 oaks and 500 ashes there ; took the stags, hinds, bucks and does at his pleasure, to the total destruction thereof; levied a rent of 12 marks for the herbage whereof he paid but 4 to the queen ; that he never accounted to her for rents of Ils. and 6s. 8d. received from William le Turnour and Robert le Turnour for their messuages within the chace and that he sv impoverished the tenants and bondmen by ransoms, undue prises and other extortions that some have relinquished their tenements and the rest are for the most part unable to perform their service to the king. On May 2 a commission was directed to Peter de Middelton, John Giffard, Robert de Shirbourn and William de Denum in identical terms. On July 22, Peter de Middelton, William de Denum and Robert de Shireburn were appointed to execute the same. By C.
