Christmas, for John Ballard, John Galeys, Coluchius fellows, merchants of the society of the Ballardi of Lucca, pollards, crockards, and other such money lately current in on condition that they cause it to be 1300. of the city of Lisbon ( Ulizebone) of goods to the value of 700/., as by lawful proof of merchants was found before John de Britannia, the younger, the king's kinsman and his lieutenant in the duchy of Aquitaine, to be the case, whereupon, by merchant law, the lieutenant gave him licence to mark, retain, and appropriate the goods of Portuguese, especially those of Lisbon wherever he found them within the king's jurisdiction until he obtained restitution, and the king confirmed the said licence. Afterwards, in the parliament at London, in the 27th year of the king's reign, in the case held before the king and council between merchants of the said realm and the said Bernard touching the arrest by the said Bernard in the name of a distress called la mark of the goods of the merchants found in a ship of the city of Lisbon at Romeneie in that year, it was considered that the said Bernard should keep the said marked goods and appropriate them until he was satisfied of his plundered goods, together with his costs and expenses, as by the record and process of that case more fully appears.
