June 35, Inquisition

Writ to the sheriff of Essex to enquire, with the coroners, who Ralph le Charetter of Binnestede at Finchingefeld and Robert le Taillur Thomas Copping at Stanburne. Westminster. 5 May 13 Edward I. Inquisition : William Skym of Finchingfeud, John de Depeden of Suffolk Geoffrey le Tournour of Redeswelle, all of the household of Nicholas le and professed thieves (consueti latrones), met, assaulted and robbed men, and in the assault killed the said Ralph. They then returned the house of Nicholas le Tournour, brother of Geoffrey, in Redeswell, staying day and a night, and then fled the country. Nicholas was imprisoned in Castle for receiving them, and was subsequently acquitted before R. de Suchirch and his companions, justices of gaol delivery, but he has since secretly received his brother Geoffrey. John de Depedin was seen in a wood in Toppesfeld, and some of the country pursued to take him for the aforesaid felony. But he killed Robert le Tayllur Thomas Copping of Stanbourn, and was himself so severely wounded he died the moment he was taken. William Skym afterwards returned was at once taken by the king's bailiffs and imprisoned in Colchester and there died. No man procured these slayings. C. Ing. Misc. File 44. (35.) 22.75.
