Commission to John le Breton and William le Gros. Marleberge. December 31 Edward I. [1302.] Inquisition : Colecestre. Thursday after the octave of St. John the The master and brethren of the hospital of lepers of St. Mary Magdalene, never received tithe of bread, ale, or kitchen messes in Colchester ; Robert, the present abbot, has not withdrawn from them 6/. yearly his manor of Brichtlingeseye, but they still receive the same as they always been wont. The said hospital is of the foundation of the king and his ancestors, and said abbot has therein an estate (statum) of wardenship viz. that no or brother ought to be preferred or admitted without his assent ; his have always had such an estate. At the beginning of the year 30 Edward I, when a collection of a fifteenth to the king was being made, and when Roger de Creppyngges had elected by the brethren of the said hospital as master with the assent of said abbot, and admitted thereto, because it was ordered that nothing be paid by houses governed by lepers as masters, the brethren preferred de Neylond, a leper, in the place of the master, without the assent of MISCELLANEOUS 523 abbot and the said Roger. so as to deprive the king of the fifteenth the hospital. heard this, the said abbot entered the said hospital without force it, and finding that brothers Simon de Neylond and William de were rebellious, and carried away the charters and common seal hospital against the will of their brethren and of the said abbot and Roger, and, though often admonished by the abbot in his visitation the said charters and seal. refused to do so, removed them from the as it was lawful for him to do. said abbot did not illtreat the brethren or carry away their goods. sometime abbot of Colchester, died 68 years past. Writ to Walter de Gloucestre, escheator south of Trent. Morpath. 31 Edward I. [1303.] : Northampton. Tuesday after St. Osith. messuage of the friars of the order of the Penance at Northampton was into the king's hand because Sir Edward. prince of Wales, was told was given to the friars by Queen Eleanor, his mother, who purchased own cost, and that the friars had withdrawn therefrom. jurors say that the said queen did not so purchase the messuage or to the friars ; the messuage owes no service to the king and is not held king in chief. de Cogeho, knight, purchased part of the messuage from Andrew burgess of Northampton, who held of Gilbert de Blisworth by the service of 4s., and the residue of John le Plomer, who held of the master of St. Leonard without Northampton by the service of 2s. and said Nicholas gave the messuage to the friars there for the souls of and his ancestors, so that if the friars should depart, the messuage revert to him or to Maud his wife, or to their heirs, as is testified by indented between him and [Michael] de Cornubia, then prior, by John de Farlington, knight. has been no dedication or burial there ; the messuage is of the yearly half a mark.
