Commission to John de Kirkeby and Alexander le Convers. W. bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, treasurer. Westminster. February 25 Edward I. [1297.] Inquisition : Symoneburme in Tyndale. Friday before St. Gregory. All the lands and tenements in Tyndall taken into the king's hand by Sir de Kirkeby, sheriff of Northumberland, from the Monday in Whitsun when the said sheriff and Walter Bacoun on the king's part caused the lands to be extended and all the free tenants thereof to do fealty to the remained continuously in the king's hand until Sunday before Michaelmas following in the year 24 Edward I. On that day Sir A. bishop of Durham, came to Tyndall with the king's directed to the said John de Kirkeby, as bailiff of Tyndall, to have the of Werk and all other lands in his bailiwick of Tyndall, as John de late king of Scotland, gave them to him by charter, together with corn thereon. On pretext of this writ Richard de Aldeburgh, minister of the king's bailiff Tyndall, delivered to the said bishop the said manor with the corn thereon, still remains in his hand. All the other lands remained in the king's hand until the eve of St. Simon St. Jude next following, when came John de Aykescogh, proctor of on the part of the bishop of Durham, bringing the king's directed to the bailiff of Tyndall to deliver to the said bishop all the lands his immediate tenants, taken into the king's hand for rebellion, the lands MISCELLANEOUS 489 in the king's prison being retained. He delivered the said writ on day to Thomas de Belsow, minister of the king's bailiff of Tyndall, seisin of the said lands, which the said minister refused, until he by inquisition what lands were held immediately of the said said John would not permit the said Thomas to take any inquisition the liberty of the said bishop, wherefore the said Thomas would not seisin of the said lands. said John seized into the hand of the said bishop the manor of Tyrset, belonged to Sir John Comyn of Badenagh ; the manor of Espeltewode, belonged to Sir Richard Swarde ; the manor of Scutelyngton, which to John de Scutelyngton ; the manor of La Moryley, which belonged de la Moryley and Aymerde Retherford; the manor of which belonged to Adam de Swynburn; the manors of Wallewyk, and Hethensalgh, with all the barony of Thorntone, belonged to Sir John Comyn the younger ; the manor of Quarredale, to John Pratte, in the hand of Sir John Wischarde of Scotland, wardship, by reason of the minority of the said John Pratte ; and part of the town of Hetheryngtone, which belonged to Henry de said John de Aykescogh removed the king's reeves from the said manors in new reeves on the part of the said bishop, in whose hand all the were from the said vigil of St. Simon and St. Jude 24 Edward I after St. Nicholas 25 Edward I. that time the said John de Aykescogh levied to the use of the said issues to the amount of 1421. 17s. 5d., which came to the hand of Walter the said bishop's bailiff of Tyndall. On the said Saturday the de Belsow by the king's writ re-seized the said lands into the Commission to John de Batesford and Roger de Hegham. : Edward the king's son. Westminster. 24 October 25 Edward I. of venire facias in pursuance to the sheriff of Dorset. from the said commissioners to the said sheriff. of jurors. that whereas the king by letters patent appointed the said John to inquire upon the articles in petitions of John de Maundevill de Tynton, and the said John and Roger ordered the sheriff of to cause to come before them at Lym on Saturday after the 26 Edward I a jury for making the inquisition, and to notify to de Waleden and mayor and bailiffs of Lym ; the sheriff returned of jurors and that he had notified the said Humphrey and that mayor and bailiffs are within the liberty of Lym, into which the of Dorset has no entry, and that the said writ was returned to the said and bailiffs, who gave the sheriff no answer thereto. said Alice came, and John de Maundevill, likewise by Henry le Botiler, attorney, and the said Humphrey, and Geofirey le Keu, asserting to be mayor of Lym, and Robert le Mercer, asserting himself to be of Lym, and John de Coker of Lym, asserting himself to be bailiff of and the said mayor, sheriff, and bailiff acknowledged the receipt of return, but not as a return, and that they are not bound to answer INQUISITIONS ; also by reason of the liberty of Lym, which they have by charter present king, the commonalty of Lym have a mayor and sheriff of and are not bound to answer elsewhere anything touching the of Lym, except by writs directed to the sheriff of Lym, and they the king's charter, in which is contained that the king has granted to burgesses of Lym all the liberties granted to the citizens of London. said mayor, sheriff, and bailiff went away in contempt and would not more appear before the said commissioners ; the said Alice and John that the inquisition may be made, and the said Humphrey, for the having heard the petitions, said nothing whereby the said inquisition not to be made. inquisition then remained to be taken for default of certain jurors, who not come, and because certain other jurors were challenged by the said C.
