Saturday after the Nativity of St. Mary. time of King Henry III a little island called Rawenserod, distant town of Grimisby by the space of a tide, first came into existence by the wash (per alluvionem) of the sea, and fishers dried their nets and men began to live there, and afterwards ships began to discharge and now, because the said island is nearer the sea than the town of and ships can more easily come to land, nearly all the ships stay Walter son of Ralph de Seleby, William Brune, Peter de Mari and MISCELLANEOUS 429 de Cotes, with others unknown, of the island of Rawenserod, with boats meet ships in the Humber and at sea, and induce the merchants to land at Rawenser, saying that the burgesses of Grimisby usually in the price of things sold, and that a last of herrings is only worth whereas it is worth 40s., and thus by words, offerings and outdetain them so long that they cannot come to the port of Grimisby, the town every year since the king's coronation is poorer to the of 100 marks, and cannot pay the farm. years past a ship was wrecked on Rawenserod, where there was then and a man appropriated it and made a hut (scalam), which he for so long that he received sailors and merchants and sold them drink ; and afterwards others began to live there, but thirty years past were not more than 4 dwelling houses. the last four years the men of Grimisby, who bought fish and herrings merchandise from fishers and others coming with their ships to that did not immediately pay the price and caused the merchants to stay before they were paid, which is another cause why ships do not touch as they were wont, and for this reason the town is deteriorated value of 40/., but now they duly pay the merchants, who can come within three tides. de Fortibus, countess of Aumale, is lady of the said island, and profit therefrom. men living there buy and sell every day at their will, and there is no market day ; they take toll like a borough viz. from every ship laden herrings, having a rudder, 4d. a last, and from every boat 2d. a last, and merchandise. .... .
