[1288.] : Henry de Larenden held a fifth part of the manor of by the service of a fifth part of a moiety of a knight's fee ;_ he sold to Paulinus le Pevere, who died seised thereof ; it descended by to John his son and heir, father of the present John, who sold Crowe and his heirs for a yearly rent of 5 marks, and sold a of the advowson of the church of the manor to Thomas son of the said Geoffrey and Thomas were in seisin many years before of the said John. Saturday before St. Matthew. a clerk of the hundred of Middelton, by grant of King John, baile chapel and a small hospital for housing the poor at Schamele in the of Sydingeburn, which fell to the eround after his death. present chapel was built by the alms of passengers and of others of hundred of Middelton, and King Henry III conferred it upon a chaplain, Silvester, who lived there 16 years or more ; it was raised on the soil in honour of God and of St. Thomas the Martyr ; the present king Eleanor, the queen mother, can confer the chapel w hen void (and it is void) without prejudice to the right of any. the death of the said Silvester, Master Simon de Shordich, then vicar took the chapel with the other buildings into his hand and by default of the king's bailiffs of the hundred of Middelton ; the Master Simon was succeeded as vicar by one Boniface, who sold and the said houses. were two bells, one of which a brother, who ought to have dwelt carried away into Essex ; the other and the whole of the marble altar taken to the church of Sydingeburn by the aforesaid Master Simon.
