Writ of venire facias in pursuance to the sheriff of York. Inquisition : York. Monday after the Gule of August. John de Brerele and John Scot one day before Christmas contended in St. Abbey, York, with abusive words, and departed in hatred (odiose) ; said John Brereley one day lay in wait for the said Scot at Colerosse in king's highway near Clyfton, as he came from York carrying cloth of his master, and attacked him and twice shot an arrow at him, and him once on the arm; the said John Scot wished to flee, but could not danger of death, so he shot back an arrow at the said John de and hit him so that he died. The said John Scot killed the said John de Brereley in self-defence. C. Ing. Misc. File 46. (27.) 1419.
