Order to king's hand from the manors, advowsons and land of which de Todenham was seised at his death in his demesne as of fee, and further therewith, restoring the issues thereof, as by an taken by William Trussel, then escheator this side Trent, it was Robert held in his demesne as of fee certain lands in Todenham co. Suffolk, in chief by the service of a knight's fee and of to'the ward of Norwich castle 2s. 5d. yearly and 2d. of fee of the the castle at three terms every two years; and that he also held in as of fee the manors of Grundesburgh and Great Belynges with of the church of the manor of Belynges, co. Suffolk, in chief, of a knight's fee and of rendering to the ward of that castle as and that he held other lands of Thomas earl of Norfolk and marshal William de Bohun, earl of Northampton, Robert de Scales and Pecche and of other lords, by knight's service and by other services, Robert son of Thomas de Todenham, his kinsman, is his next heir twelve years, and afterwards Robert de Scales asserted in chancery de la Hay, clerk and Thomas de Wolferton, his attorneys, that inquisition had been taken at the suit of some who were scheming him and the other lords of their inheritance, and that Robert held in chief at his death, and for this he placed himself upon the ; and William de Thorp, who sued for the king, said that Robert held manors and lands in chief, as was found by the inquisition, and he to verify this by the country ; and the king gave Robert de Scales a him on the quinzaine of Martinmas last to do and receive what determined in the premises, wherefore the king ordered William his fellows, justices appointed to hold pleas before him, to cause knights to come before him on the said day, and other lawful co. Suffolk, having no affinity or kinship with Robert de Scales or lords aforesaid, to acknowledge upon oath whether Robert de held in chief, as William said and as was found by the inquisinot, as Robert de Scales said, because both William and Robert on that jury, and for greater evidence of the premises the that inquisition to the justices and divers other inquisitions taken premises by his order and all the process held upon the said affair and elsewhere, under the half seal, ordering them to carethese, and, after calling the king's serjeants and others to do be in accordance with the law and custom of the realm, and being discussed and judgment rendered, they should return to for execution the said inquisitions, etc., and the record and process them with all things touching the same ; and by the inquisition knights and other lawful men sworn upon this and by the John de Lakenhuth, under sheriff of co. Suffolk, the triers, before the king, it is found that Robert de Todenham at held no lands in Todenham and Kessegrave, co. Suffolk, or the of Grundesburgh and Great Belynges, nor the said advowson nor in chief as in demesne, or in service or revision, in co. Suffolk, he died seised in his demesne, as of fee of the said lands in and Kessegrave, which are parcel of the manor of Todenham, held of Walter de Naunton and Joan his wife as of Joan's right, of a knight's fee, and that Robert was seised in his demesne of the manors of Grundesburgh and Great Belynges and of the of Belynges church, which is appurtenant to the manor of which are held of Gilbert Peeche, to wit, the manor of by the service of a knight's fee and the manor of Great Belynges and the advowson by the service of a knight's fee, and it is considered that the king should amove his hand from the said manors, advowson and land; and by other inquisitions taken in divers counties it is found that Robert held no lands in chief whereby the custody of his lands ought to pertain to the king.
