Order to permit the men of Spondon in that to have respite until the Purification next for their portion of the and to restore anything which they may have levied of them withdelay, as at the suit of the said men showing that the church of the the town and all their goods and chattels therein were lately burned and the men are almost destroyed thereby and the yendors and assessors intend to levy the ninth of them as of others in the county, with all possible speed, and beseeching the king to grant them some mitigation or remission, the king appointed Roger Deyncourt, Edward Chaundos, Roger de Baukwell and Godfrey Folejaumbe to take an inquisition on the matter, and now it is found by this inquisition that the church was entirely burned by mishap with books, belfry, bells, vestments and all other ornaments thereof, and the town also except four messuages at the end of the town, and all the goods and chattels in the church and town were likewise burned on Thursday before Palm Sunday last about the hour of vespers, and the said men have suffered to the sum of 1,000/. and more by this cause, and they have not since retrieved themselves, and nothing of the subsidy can be levied of them by reason of their want, and in consideration of this the king has given them the said respite.
