Geoffrey de Nevill, justice of the Forest beyond Trent. Whereas, at request of W. late archbishop of York, the king caused an inquisition taken by Geoffrey whether it would be to the damage of the king or of forest of Shyrewod, or of any one, if he should grant that the archbishop make a clearing (trenchcam) of the breadth of forty feet in his own soil his wood called Lytelhawe between that wood and the abbot of wood called Brunne, from the king's highway to Blyth in length to the water of Rayngwath, and another clearing in own soil of his wood called Blithewurth between the same wood and wood of the prior of Newstead in Shirewude that begins at Blakeand extends to the cross called Scarletecros, which are within bounds of the forest aforesaid; and the king, after inspecting inquisition and after finding that the grant would not be to damage or the damage of any other, granted that the archmight make and have the clearings; and W. archbishop of York, archbishop's successor, has besought the king to grant to him the same and the king has caused his petition to be granted: the justice is ordered to permit the archbishop to have the clearings without or challenge. the keeper of the forest of Clarendon.
