the sheriff of Kent. The men and tenants of the abbot of St. Au- Canterbury of his manors of Menstre in the Isle of Thanet, S[t]urreye, Lutelburn, Northburn, Lenham, and Plumsted have by their petition before the king and his council that whereas the and four men of each tithing (borgha) of those manors with them, at the time when they came to the sheriff's tourns in county to present those things that pertain to the view of frankpledge, rent called the sheriff's tourn, and that although it was conin a plea lately moved in the king's court before the king, between abbot and John Malemeyns of Hoo, then sheriff of that county, by of certain charters made to the abbot by the king and his that the abbot and his successors should have for ever the view and what pertains to such view in the aforesaid manors, presentations and other things that pertain to such view in the manor[ s] ought to be made in the abbot's court of the manors and not elsewhere, the sheriff nevertheless distrains the said men tenants because all the borghesalders (borghesaldri) with four men of tithing did not come to his tourns after the consideration aforesaid, they have sent the aforesaid rent to him by a man from the time of consideration until now, and they have prayed the king for a remedy ; appears by the record and process of the said plea, and by a certificate into chancery by the sheriff, which the king afterwards caused to before him and his council, that the abbot ought to have the view and those things that pertain to the view in the said manors, the orders the sheriff to supersede entirely his distresses of the men and to come to his tourns by the borghesalders and four men of each to bring the aforesaid rent, and to release to them the distresses made behalf; provided that the rent be paid to the king in full at the by one man.
