Appointment of Robert Thorp as clerk of the king's works at Portesmouth and Portechestre, co. Southampton, and to take stonemasons, carpenters and other workmen and labourers necessary for the same, and stone, timber, tiles, shingles, glass, iron, lead and other necessaries, and carriage for the same; and further to make inquisition in each county whether the said necessaries were bought, and if not to restore them, and to sell the residue of the trees provided and answer to the king for the money; taking in the office the wages of 12d. a day out of the subsidies and customs in the port of [Cijcestre, as Robert Barbot, deceased, had at the Exchequer. Whereas by letters patent dated 12 September in the nineteenth year, on the death of Ralph Rocheford, knight, and John Glaston, the king granted the manors of Newenton Longvile to Henry, archbishop of Canterbury, John, bishop of Bath and Wells, John, bishop of St. Asaph, William, bishop of Salisbury, William, earl of Suffolk, John Somerseth, Thomas Bekynton, Richard Andrewe, Adam Moleyns, clerks, John Hampton, James Ienys, esquires, and William Tresham, and they by their charter dated 31 March, 19 Henry VI, rendered the same to the king ; the king, considering the poverty of Saint Marie College of Winchestre in Oxenford, and at the instance of the king's clerk and secretary, Master Thomas Bekynton, doctor of laws, has granted to Master Nicholas Osulbury, warden of the said college, and his fellows the said manors in frank almoin. By p.s. and dated as above. 26 Whereas William Botelere of Thrysford, late of Fulborn, co. Cambridge, was indicted before Robert Randes, coroner in the county of Norfolk, on view of the body of John Mollettes, of having on 28 July in the fifteenth year lain in wait at Thrysford in the fifth hour before noog i9 HENRY VI. Parr 2. 517 ina ditch of the prior of Bynham near the said John's house and wounded and killed him with an instrument called a wyfyle, making & wound in the left side of his head four inches long and three inches deep, till the brains flowed out, and of having stolen 18s. 4d. of the said John; and also by the name of William Baly alias William Chaumberleyn, late of Thrisford, co. Norfolk, yoman, the same William was indicted before the justices of the peace and of oyer and terminer in the county of having on Thursday before St. Peter's Chains in the same year lain in wait at Thrisford and assaulted John Molettes and slain him with instruments called long pykes and glyves ; and before the same justices was further indicted by the name of William Baly of Melborn, co. Cambridge, sengilman, of having on Thursday in the feast of St. James the Apostle in the same year broken at Thyrsford with swords and staves the closes and houses of John Molettys and assaulted, beaten, wounded and slain him; and afterwards Maud, late the wife of the said John, appealed the said William by the name of William Boteler late of Thyrsford, co. Norfolk, yoman, alias William Baly, late of Thyrsford, sengilman, of the said death, whereby he was outlawed ; the king has pardoned him the king's suit for the said death and for all felonies and trespasses committed by him in this behalf and any consequent outlawry.
