Whereas it was found by inquisition taken before Thomas Stokedale, in the county of Essex, that Elizabeth, late the wife of Thomas knight, held on the day of her death the manor of Holend in the county, by demise, for her life, of Philip Morgon, late bishop of Ely, Bathe, clerk, Bartholomew Brokesby, John Russell, Walter Kebbyll, Daundesey, and Thomas ap Llewellyn, with reversion to James, of Ormond, John Sutton, chivaler, Thomas Rempston, chivaler, Salveyn, William Scarlet, Robert Darcy, Henry Fylongley, Newport, clerk, and Nicholas Betley, their heirs and assigns, by deed which the said bishop and the others named above made to the earl and his aforesaid co-reversioners, now surviving, and to Thomas, of Salisbury, Richard Hastynges, chivaler, and Baldwin Bugge, deceased, their heirs and assigns, of the said manor, by the name of manor of Holand, which the said Elizabeth, by the name of Elizabeth the wife of Edward Burnell, chivaler, held for life; by virtue of grant the said Elizabeth and Thomas Kerston, chivaler, then husband, attorned to the said earls and their said co-grantees; that the said Elizabeth died seised of such manor with remainder above, without the king's licence having been obtained for these and that the said manor is held in chief by knight service ; manor has been taken into the king's hands as well by the death Elizabeth as by reason of the trespass; the king, for 10/. paid in the has pardoned the trespass and granted that the said surviving shal] have the said manor to hold to them and their heirs, ES A ES SS TS 12. Whereas Richard II granted licence for the alienation in mortmain by William de Gunthorp, clerk, James Staunton, clerk, and Walter Ulseby, clerk, to the chapter of the church of St. Mary Suthwell of a messuage and 60 acres of land in North Carleton towards the sustenance of a chaplain, and afterwards Henry IV granted licence for the alienation in mortmain by Thomas Haxey, canon of the said church, to the said chapter of a messuage, 120 acres of land and 7 acres of meadow in Batheleye, Northmuskham and Holme, co. Nottingham, and by virtue of such licence the chapter were seised of the premises until by colour of an inquisition, taken at Cromewell on the morrow of SS. Simon and Jude last past, whereby it was found that William de Northwell, clerk, was seised in his demesne as of fee of a messuage, 100 acres of land and 2 closes in Batheleye, a messuage and 60 acres of land in Northcarleton and a messuage, 2 tofts and 80 acres of land in Northwell, and that he by - fine levied in the court of King Edward at York on the quinzaine of Easter in his twelfth year, granted the same in tail to Henry son of Richard Grymmynge of Northwell and Elizabeth his wife, with remainders in tail male to Hugh Rylynge of Woodhous and Alice his wife, and to John son of Robert de Holme and Alice his wife, and with remainder over to the said King Edward and his heirs, and by virtue of such fine the said Henry and Elizabeth were seised thereof and had issue one daughter, Joan, their heir, who married Robert Tonke and they had issue one son, John, and died and the said John died without heir of his body on Monday after the Assumption in the seventeenth year of the present king, and that the said Hugh Rylynge and Alice and John son of Robert de Holme and Alice, died without heirs male of their bodies, they were put out of possession of the said messuage, 100 acres of land and 2 closes in Batheleye, which are parcel of the said messuages, land and meadow, in Batheleye, Northmuskham and Holme, and out of the said messuage and 60 acres of land in Northcarleton, which are the messuage and 60 acres of land specified in the inquisition, to the great damage of the chapter and the diminution of divine worship in the said church : the king, that the chapter may be able to pray for his good estate and for his soul after death, has granted to them in frank almoin the said messuage, 100 acres and 2 closes and the said messuage and 60 acres of land which have descended to him by virtue of the said fine, together with the mesne profits from the date of the said inquisition.
