Bedford, esquire, William Strekeland of Ampthill, gentilman, John Hamewell of Yeakesle, co. Huntingdon, gentilman, Adam Alford of Ampthill, gentilman, Thomas Kempston of Bedford, gentilman, John Gryffyn of Ampthill, gentilman, and John Gyst of London, gentilman, for all offences committed on 20 January last; Thomas Wawton, John Enderby, John Fitz and Henry Etwell, justices of the peace and of oyer and terminer for the county of Bedford, and Thomas Stratton, undersheriff of the county, having certified that when they had come to hold a certain session of the peace on the date mentioned at Bedford, the said John Cornewaill and the rest of the first forty-five named in the pardon, with others unspecified, came upon them into the judgment hall (pretorium) at Bedford, armed and in riotous manner, and insulted the said justices and others of the king's lieges there, as in the said certification remaining of record with the king more fully may appear. On the 10th of February following the said justices and undersheriff were examined severally upon oath in the Star Chamber at Westminster, touching the contents of their certification, in the presence of Humphrey, . Parr 1. 247 duke of Gloucester, John, bishop of Bath and Wells, the chancellor, Richard Neville, earl of Salisbury, Henry Percy, earl of Northumberland, Ralph Cromwell, knight, the treasurer, and other lords of the council, as in & certain act of the matter, remaining of record among the acts of the king's council, more fully appears. And, although upon perusal of the certification and the examinations divers discrepancies appear amongst the different articles of the certification and from the examinations the conduct of the said John and the others seems to have been not without excuse, yet they cannot legally contravene or deny the said certification, though they assert it to be the untruthful issue of anger and malice, which indeed, from the examination, seems likely.
