Commission to Stephen de Penecestre, constable of Dover castle, and de Cobeham to enquire touching a complaint on behalf of the prior of Church, Canterbury, that the abbot of St. Augustine's, Canterbury, Pitte, his steward, and his bailiffs of Northburn have removed a 14 feet wide, going through a wall in the highway between Sandand the town of Dale (which the abbot and his men of Northburn, co. are bound to repair, and which their predecessors have always and kept up), and constructed another, eight feet and a half wide, the said wall is destroyed and the lands adjacent submerged by of the sea, and the highway closed against all persons; and if it appear by the inquisition that this is true then to cause the abbot his men to be distrained by the sheriff of Kent to restore to and keep up their former condition the wall and gutter aforesaid. 14.
