Writ de intendendo directed to the good men and whole commonalty of the city of Winchester, for Adam de Wynton, king's clerk, citizen thereof, appointed to the custody thereof in place of a mayor until the king's arrival there or until he shall have sent some one from his side, which will be shortly, to settle the matter: as discords have arisen amongst them, whereupon a case is moved before the king, and the king is unwilling that they should intermeddle in the election of a mayor or of bailiffe or the custody of the city until such discords are settled and a concord made between them ; and Adam in the meantime is to make bailiffs of the better men of the city who have taken no part in the said contentions or are not suspected of so doing, who are to do what appertains to the office of bailiffs and be answerable for the issues of the city, as other bailiffs have been wont to do.
