1298-03-26, And Safe-conduct

Grant, for life, to W. bishop of Coventry and Lichfield of the custody of the hospital of St. Leonard's, York. On the 20th of November, 25 Edward I., the king granted to the said bishop, then bishop elect, that he should retain, for life, the said hospital, which he held as the king's mere gift, and which would fall vacant by his consecration, and that he should receive the fruits thereof as he had done hitherto, provided that he could obtain licence from the apostolic see to retain the said hospital after his consecration, and that no prejudice should arise thereby to the king and his heirs. Lest, however, any prejudice should arise to the king or his heirs from a dispensation of this kind, the king, desiring that the bishop should hold the custody of the hospital by his mere collation, has granted it to him for life.
