Grant, for the glory of God and of his confessor John of Beverley, by whose intercession greater benefits may accrue to the king from God, to the _ canons of the church of Beverley, where the body of the saint rests, of 40J. a year at the Exchequer of Berwick-on-T weed until a competent ecclesiastical benefice be provided in the realm of Scotland, out of which that sum, all expenses being deducted, may be had for ever. The conditions of this grant are as follows ; that the said canons and their successors, on each of the two festivals of the said saint, to wit, the principal feast and that of his translation, shall distribute a penny to every one of 3,000 poor, and take for their pittance 50s., and shall find at the said festivals two great wax candles, each of 20 lbs. of wax, to be placed near the great altar before the tomb of the saint, and to be burning during the celebration or singing of mass or other service in the church ; that they shall find two smaller wax candles of proper form and stature and corresponding weight, to be placed before the banner of the saint, and to be lit during mass, matins, or other service on Sundays, the festivals of the apostles and other principal festivals; and that tbey find a priest celebrating the mass of the said saint every day at the said altar, and two other wax candles burning during such mass. They shall also provide all books, vestments, ornaments for the altar and other things required for the celebration.
