Grant, in fee simple, by assent and advice of the Council, to Philip Mestede, knight, of the manor of Claweton, co. Devon; upon his petition alleging that when he arraigned an assize of novel disseisin touching the manor before Robert Tresilian and the other justices in that county by writ against Thomas Bret and Eleanor, his wife, the said Robert refused to proceed therein until the said Philip promised him that after judgment he would enfeoff certain persons of the said manor to the use of him the said Robert, which, after judgment and recovery, he accordingly did; and now the same is forfeited to the king with the other lands of the said Robert by judgment pf Parliament, but the said Robert before his death admitted publicly and expressly, that he had the premises unjustly and against the said Philip's will, and the charters and evidences touching the same were in the custody of John Bodelli, late clerk of the said Robert.
