The like to William Rykhill and William Brynchele to enquire touching the following circumstances, upon complaint by John Northcote of Devon that Richard Speccote (sic), being lately seised in his demesne as of fee of a messuage and sixty acres of land in Northcote, co. Devon, granted the same to Henry his son, in tail male, the said Henry died seised thereof, whereupon they descended to William, his son and heir, and from him to Walter, his son and heir, and from Walter to the said John, his son and heir, but after the death of Walter, because his said son John was abroad, one Thomas Jewe and Juliana, his wife, claiming in right of the said Juliana as heir of the said Walter and suggesting that he died without heir male of his body, entered upon the premises and were thereof seised until expelled by Walter Giffard, still living, who granted the premises to John Cary. The said John Northcote subsequently returning from abroad claimed them by virtue of the entail from the said John Cary, who, however, would not permit him to enter on possession, but continued therein until convicted of treason in the Parliament [lately] held at Westminster, whereupon the premises were forfeited to the king.
