The like to Henry de Guldeford, Thomas de Shefeld, and Henry Scrop, in the room of William de Bereford and his fellows, lately appointed justices to hold assizes within the liberty of the bishopric of Durham, touching the birth of John son of John de Maydenstane, who brought an assize before the latter against Anthony bishop of Durham, as to two parts of the manor of Thorp Theules, and against Avelina late the wife of Robert de Thorp as to the third part, as to which Avelina vouched the bishop to warranty. The bishop in the pleadings objected that John was a bastard ; whereupon it was commanded, as of course, to Robert archbishop of Canterbury, in whose diocese John had his origin, to make enquiry.
