Commission to William de Echingham and William de Hastynges to enquire touching a complaint by William Burgeys of Wynchelse and Robert son of John de Langhurst that compensation has never been made for 85 acres of land, within the site of the new town of Wynchelse, of the inheritance of the said Robert. The land was at that time in the custody of the said William and was taken into the king's hands for the extension of the new town by John, sometime bishop of Ely, the treasurer, to whom the ordering of the new town was assigned, and who promised to make William, as keeper, a reasonable exchange. The king afterwards, on complaint by William, appointed Stephen de Penecestria, John de Cobeham and Gregory de Rokesle to make such exchange out of lands of those parts in the king's hands, including compensation for any loss occasioned thereby, but by reason of the deaths of the bishop and the said commissioners it was not done. This writ was returnable. 20.
