Exemplification at the request of the mayor and citizens of Lincoln of the following : 1. An inquisition post mortem taken at Lincoln, 5 March, 4 Edward IL, by Walter de Gloucestre, escheator this side Trent, as to the lands in the county of Lincoln held by Henry de Lacy, iate earl of Lincoln. The jurors find that he had at the date of his death, of the inheritance of Margaret de Lungespeye, sometime his wife, the constableship of Lincoln Castle, held in chief by the service of making custody thereof in fee; that to it belongs the custody of the prisoners, together with wards and other issues and profits, and that the constableship is of the yearly value of 40s.; that there appertains to the said constableship 100s. rent from freeholders in the castle baily, besides rents of 42. 5s. and 56s. 10d. a year from certain external tenants in Kestyvene and Lyndesaye respectively, for ward of the castle payable quarterly ; and that Alesia, daughter of the said Henry and Margaret, is Margaret's heir, and is 26 years of age. 2. A writ directed to Roger de Wellesworth, escheator beyond Trent, dated Skemeleston, 27 May, 4 Edward IL., respiting the homage due from Thomas, earl of Lancaster (who has married the aforesaid Alesia) until the said Thomas is summoned to do the same, the I1. Parr II. 83 king having received his fealty in respect of castles, lands, &c., which the aforesaid Henry de Lacy, her father, held in chief both of his own inheritance and of that of the aforesaid Margaret, sometime countess of Salisbury, and having restored the same to the said Thomas and Alesia, saving his right to castles, lands, &c., late of the said Henry and Margaret, seisin whereof he has not recovered since the said Eenry s death. The escheator is therefore to take security from them for a reasonable relief and to give them seisin of the premises with the above exception, saying to Joan late the wife of the said Henry a reasonable dower. A writ to the sheriff of Lincoln, dated Weston-under-Hgge, 24 February, 15 Edward II., commanding him to take into the king's hands the custody of Lincoln Castle, then in the rebels hands, and it safely keep to the king's use. A deed (seriptum) (in French) enrolled in Chancery, dated Shulton, 17 August, 16 Edward U., whereby the said Alesia releases and quit claims to the kipg and his heirs all her interest in the constableship of Lincoln Castle and custody of the prison and gate thereof, together with all rents, services, suits of courts of all tenants of the baily and all other profits appendent thereto, and also all her interest in the manors of Saltfleteby and Skarthou in the county of Lincoln. Witnesses: William Motoun the elder, William Motoun the younger, knights, Ralph Tourvill, William le Levre, Geoffrey de Kestyngton, Robert de Chaumpaigne, Nicholas le Arblaster, and others. . A writ, dated Newcastle-on-Tyne, 20 September, 16 Edward IL., directed to Alan de Cubbeldyk, keeper of certain lands, forfeited to the king by rebels in the county of Lincoln, commanding him to deliver to the said Alesia for life the court of the fee of La Hay, the bailey before the gate of Lincoln Castle, and 20/. for the third part of the county of Lincoln, the possessions of her father, the said Henry de Lacy, taken into the king's hands on the forfeiture of her husband Thomas late earl of Lancaster. A writ of the same date as the last, directed to William de Paunton, constable of Lincoln Castle, commanding him to deliver up the constableship to the said Alesia to whom the king has restored it for life. A charter, dated Langele, 16 February, 5 Edward III., whereby the king, for the good service of Ebulo Lestraunge and for the release and quit-claim to him by the said Ebulo and Alesia his wife of all their interest in the castles, towns, manors, &c., which the king holds of her inheritance, and which she granted and sold to Edward II. and the Despensers while she was single, and which by their forfeiture escheated to the king, grants to the said Kbulo and Alesia and the heirs of Ebulo (1) the manors of Colham and Eggewere, co. Middlesex, Midelyngton and Burnecestre, co. Oxon, Halton, Horblyng, Scarthou, Saltfleteby Le Fryth, the castle and manor of Bolyngbrok with soke, moor and marsh, the custody and ward of Lincoln Castle with the baily there, and 20/. rent for the third penny of the county of Lincoln, all in that county, the manor of Wadenho, co. Northampton, the manor of Holleburn in the suburb of London, the castle and manor of Clifford and the manor of Glasbury in Wales which they hold for the life of her, the said Alesia, together with the knights fees, advowsons, hundreds, wapentakes, &c., thereto belonging, to hold the same as fully as Henry de Lacy held the premises, to the value of 800 marks a year; and (2) the manor of Overton with the land of Mailorseisnek, the castle RF 2 20. 10. 20. and manor of Ellesmere, together with the hundred there and the hamlets of Colmare and Hampton in the Welsh March, the manor _ of Grauncestre, co. Cambridge, and, after the death of Alice, late the _ wife of William de Stopham, the manor of Wadynyton, co. Lincoln, together with the knights fees, advowsons, &c., thereto belonging, to hold the same by the service of two knights fees for all service, to the value of 400 marks a year; with promise, if any part of the premises is by judgment of court recovered from them, to provide other lands to the same value.
