Whereas on 25 September, 11 Edward II, William de Ros of Hamelake granted and quit-claimed to the king and his heirs the castle of Werk upon Tweed with knights fees and all other appurtenances, except the advowson of cells belonging to the priory of Kirkehem and the hospital of Boulton, to exchange for 400 marks of land and rent to be granted to the said William and his heirs between the rivers Thames and Thaes; and whereas the king afterwards, to provide security to the said William, granted him 400 marks a year to be received out of the farms of the cities of York and . Parr 1. 213 viz. : 120/. and 1467. 18s. 4d. respectively, until he should be with land and rent as aforesaid; and whereas the said William acknowledged that of the said 400 marks, 100 marks were his yearly fee staying with the king, according to an indenture made in the Wardrobe the remaining 300 marks had been granted to him for the said castle, whereas he has petitioned the king to be discharged from staying with according to the said indenture, 100 marks being on that account from the said 400 marks, and that he may receive s the said 800 marks of farms of the said cities until lands or rents to that amount shall be or his castle shall be restored tohim. The king, assenting to the has in consideration of the deduction of the said 100 marks disthe said William from staying with him saving only such things he is bound to do as the king's liege man and by reason of his homage fealty. Further the king granted that he may receive the said 300 out of the farms of the said cities, viz.: 150 marks from each by hands of the bailiffs of the said cities until he shall be provided land and rents to that value between the above rivers or until the said be restored to him, provided always that if the king or his heirs shall any part of the said 300 marks of land and rent, a sum equal to part shall be deducted from the yearly payment.
