Whereas Henry III. granted to Alan Plugenet the manor of Haselberg, which William le Mareschal sometime held, to hold in fee simple, and so that the king should not disseise him or permit him to be disseised before yiaking him reasonable exchange or compensation ; and John le Mareschal sou and heir of the above William, lately sued before the king to redeem the said manor according to the ' Diction de Kenilworth,' as that which was his father's, when an adherent of Simon de Monte Forti, sometime earl of Leicester, at the time of the war between Henry III. and the said Simon and his accomplices ; and the said Alan, at the king's instance and will, surrendered the said manor into the king's hands, whereupon the king granted to John that if he ransomed it accordingly from Alan he should have seisin of it as his father had, saving the king's plea ; the king now grants to Alan that ii' the king deraigu the said manor against the said John or his heirs as his right and escheat, or recover it by judgment, then Alan shall hold it of the crown in fee simple ; but if John or his heirs can show their right to it, then the crown shall cause to be assigned to Alan and his heirs other lands, wardships or escheats to the same value.
