Dated at and upon their deaths Walter, archbishop of York, Roger de Mortuo Mari and Robert Burnel, bishop of Bath and Wells, then archdeacon of York, the king's lieutenants in England, demised the same on like conditions to Oliver de Sutton, dean of Lincoln, under the seal then u.sed in England in the following form: 'Know that we, lieutenants of Edward firstborn of the inspected (1) a letter of our said lord in these words : committed to Walter de Ludham and Simon de Hedon the the lands and heir of Hugh de Hercy, with the marriage so that they marry him when and Avhere it shall be to the advantage of the heir, and so that, out of the first issues of the lands and of the marriage, if they sell it, they provide for the maintenance of a chaplain to celebrate the anniversary of the said Hugh for ever, and approve the rest of the said issues to the use of the heir.
