Ing. Misc. File 61. (7.) Return to a writ addressed to Master Richard de Abyndon and Hereward, guardians of the bishopric of Ely during voidance, and dated 5 April 30 Edward I. [1302.] have removed the porter (janitorem) of the priory of Ely, W. de Sutton and J. de Godele, keepers of the said bishopric after of W. de Luda, long since bishop, removed the porter and substituted who continued to keep the door all the time of the voidance. There profit to the king in doing this except to continue seisin. : Ely. Monday the morrow of Palm Sunday. collation to the four offices of sub-prior, sacristan, cellarer, and of the said priory belongs to the bishop of Ely for the time to his ordinary jurisdiction in full chapter, and the bishop ought not any profit thereof, The king and his ministers ought not to intermeddle INQUISITIONS the said offices, or with the office of porter, which is of fee, in time voidance of the bishopric, and have never done so, except in the time of Fermbaud, guardian of the bishopric after the death of John de sometime bishop, who took a rod from the porter of the priory and re-delivered it to him, not otherwise removing him from his ; and in the time of the before mentioned William de Sutton and John Godele, who seized the whole priory into the king's hand by reason of voidance of the bishopric, before the separation of the priory from the by charter of the present king, at which time the keepers removed porter and substituted another in his place.
