Writ of venire facias in pursuance to the sheriff of Dorset. of jurors. Inquisition before the said commissioners in the presence of Humphrey de ; the mayor and bailiffs and commonalty of Lym having been before them. Lym. Tuesday in the feast of the Invention of the Cross 23 Edward I. [1295.] men of Lym were accustomed to do suit to the hundred of John de of Whitecherch twice a year, of which suit the ancestors of the John were seised from time beyond memory. de Maundevill, father of the said John, whose heir he is, was seised after whose death the king had seisin by reason of the minority of the son ; until Lym came into the hand of the queen consort and the granted certain liberties to the men of the town, the bailifis and men Lym have withdrawn their suit for 10 years, to the king's damage of 20s. taken in Lym ought to be judged by the said hundred, and the of the said John, and the king (in the name of wardship) were seised this right until bailiffs and men of Lym raised gallows within the precinct their town, claiming this liberty by reason of the king's charter. MISCELLANEOUS 473 ancestors of the said John were accustomed to have the right of in Lym and to have 13 pennyworth for 12 pence, until the mayor, and men of Lym by reason of their charter would not allow this ancestors of the said John were seised of a rent of 10s. for suit, which of the town of Lym once used to do to the said hundred ; the mayor, and men of Lym have detained the said rent by reason of their ancestors of the said John and all their men used to be quit of toll said town, but by reason of the said charter toll has been exacted for rent of 12d. from a tenement called la Hurst, which the ancestors said John used to receive, has been unjustly detained by. the mayor, and men of Lym by reason of the said charter. de Tynteyn and her ancestors and their men of Cobheye, from time memory, used to be quit of toll, stallage, and keelage (culagio) to buy and sell freely in la Cobbe, until the mayor, bailiffs, and Lym by reason of their said charter now for ten years have not allowed the said Alice freely holds her tenements of Robert son of Payn, bailiffs, and men of Lym take distraints upon her Jand without of the said town; they also hinder her men from storing wine, salt, herrings, and other merchandise for sale in their and distrain her men in the town of Lym to answer foreigners done without the liberty of the town, and do not allow her to court, as her ancestors were accustomed to have it. [1295.] de Tutonia, notary, with his two grooms and Master William de were lodged in the inn of Walter de Eyton without the east gate in the suburb of that city on the Saturday after Ascension. night the said Master William took the said Bernard and _ his to the garden of Hugh le Sumenur, near the said inn, and made them him, and when they were thus sitting the said William caused his to come from the inn to him in the said garden (which the said for hire from Robert de Terneu) to feed there on the grass of the who, perceiving this, came there, and found the said thus feeding to his damage, and asked whose they were. The answered that they were his horses, and Hugh said that impound them ; and William said that, if he would have greater the horses than himself, he could take them where he would, and Hugh he would impound them and so did ; and after he had led the horses garden he took a stick and returned to the garden, and found them and drinking there as before, and asked them to go out of his garden. his wife perceived that he had taken a stick and was going towards feared that a quarrel might arise and called for aid at the top of (swmma voce). le Vineter and Hugh son of Luke le Waterledere, hearing her cry, the place with their swords, and found them fighting, and the said in aid of the said Hugh drew his sword and struck one of the grooms Bernard and wounded him slightly on the fore part of his head, said Master William and his grooms struck the said Hugh, Thomas, with their fists, whereby the contention arose.
