Writ to Malcolm de Harlee, escheator south of Trent. Beaulieu. September 21 Edward I. [1293.] Dorset. Inquisition : Brodewyndesores. Friday after Michaelmas. John de Brodewindesores, who held the manor of Brodewindesores in chief great serjeanty, to wit, by the service of staying at the Exchequer to the money, for which service he received 12d. a day from the king's pledged the said sergeanty to one Adam de Stratton for 50 marks, he paid a moiety and forthwith died, and so the sergeanty remained the hand of the said Adam, who afterwards committed the same to William, brother, who now holds it. Adam Donelis, who held of the said John two virgates of land in Adesham Nitherbeye of the appurtenances of the manor of Brodewindesores by serjeanty of paying to the said manor 10s. 6d. in the name of serjeanty rent, sold the said land to William Everard, who afterwards purchased confirmation thereof from the said John ; after the death of the said William his son and heir, entered and held the said land, and did and paid therefor. John de Windesores the elder (vefustior) gave to the abbot and convent Schireborn a hundred years past a plot called Fursgore, containing 12 acres, of all service, of the yearly value of half a mark. Ive de Sanputte, who held a virgate of land called Nerthdon of the manor Windesores by the service of 18d. in the name of serjeanty, sold the same Ive de Rochford, after whose death Ralph, his son and heir, entered and and afterwards sold the same to the abbot and convent of Forde twenty past, for which tenement the said abbot pays the serjeanty yearly. William de Wolffeland, who held a virgate of land of the appurtenances of said manor by the serjeanty of paying 8?d., enfeoffed the abbot of Forde years past; a tenement called Aghteleye was alienated in the same to the said abbot twenty years past, to wit, half a virgate of land, which he pays yearly in the name of serjeanty 83d. Peter de Boskevile, who held half a virgate of land of the appurtenances the said manor, enfeoffed the said abbot thereof, so that the king will lose reliefs and the like. MISCELLANEOUS 457 is a wood called Costelwode, containing 12 acres, which the abbot has appropriated by feofment, so that the king will lose wards, reliefs like ; the said wood being of the appurtenances ot the said serjeanty. Sussex, with a chapel and three with garderobe adjoining the southern head of the hall, can be properly repaired for 10/., for the stay there of lady Joan, late the Robert de Camvil, to whom the king has given the said manor for exchange for the manor of Westerham, co. Kent. are three solars at the other head of the said hall with garderobe, can be well and properly repaired for 35/.; two houses on each side gate can be repaired for 40s. ; the drawbridge for 20s. ; the palings round for 20s.; the granges and beast houses for 20s.; timber for the to be taken within the manor. Sum, 50/. growing crops are worth 11/. 14s. 5d.; the live stock and implements 8/. 13s. 2d.; the crops and stock were delivered to the said lady in part recompense of 58/. 2s. 104d. for loss sustained by her through gift of the manor of Westerham to the abbot and convent of Writ to Geoffrey de Picheford, constable of Windsor Castle. 16 October 21 Edward I. [1294.] the timber of the friars of the order of St. Mary of Mount Carmel, which remained after an inundation at Acle, five pieces were carried by the flood, whereof John Chaplain, stationed at the chapel of Hugh Phileberto, took a piece, which he found in a field after the flood down, and made boards for a bridge called Braiebruge ; Henry found a piece on his land and had it carried to his house ; Joan Bullok a piece on her land, and made boards to repair a bridge on the king's near Acle; the servants of lady Joan de Loringes found a piece corn, and took it and repaired a bridge with it ; two pieces still lie at and one piece on the island of Edmund Bullok. said friars have caused all their said timber except the said seven to be carried to London. [1293.] : Bermundeseye. 11 October. late prior of Bermundeseye, on the eve of St. Laurence last past, patent of himself and his convent, presented Geofirey de Wyttleburi to J. bishop of Winchester to the vicarage of Camerewelle, then by the death of Thomas, sometime vicar, who died on the third or fourth the said presentation. said letters having been delivered to the said bishop, he by his letters the archdeacon of Surrey to enquire in the usual manner, and the archdeacon ordered the dean of Suwerk to execute the bishop's order ; the said dean was then in distant parts, the said Geoffrey went official of the said bishop and asked him to take the inquisition and not meddle in the matter because the execution belonged to the and dean, wherefore the said Geoffrey waited the arrival of the dean at Camerewelle. [1293.] manor of Dodinton by Clyve in the hundred of Wilibroc in the time Richard was ancient demesne, and used to render to the king 151. ; in the time of that king it came to the hands of Richard de la Haye, death it descended to Nicholaa, Juliana and Isabel, his daughters and in the time of King John the whole manor came to the hands said Nicholaa, but how the jurors are ignorant; she enfeoffed MISCELLANEOUS 461 Deyncourt, grandfather of Edmund Deyncourt, the present tenant, at a rent of a sore sparrowhawk. the time of King Henry, the tenants impleaded John Deyncourt, then the said manor, and the plea was determined before Nicholas de Turri fellows, justices itinerant in co. Northampton, and the tenants were of being villeins of the said John. jurors know nothing of any right of William Humet or Gerard de in the manor, except that they have heard that the said William the said Juliana and that the said Gerard married the said time of King John, two Normans came to England, Gerard de Caunville le Humet. The king made the said William high justice ; he Dodington to farm, which rendered him 15/. a year ; he advised the go to Normandy, and, when the king came there, all the land was him, so he returned to England; when the said William heard that had returned, he fled. came Gerard de Caunville and spoke so well with Robert le Mey, then of Northampton and lord of Braybroke, that he did not seize the town into the king's hand, but left it to him in peace as William le held it, and so he held it all his life, and so by the treason of the said and Gerard 15/. of yearly rent have been lost until now. after the battle of Lincoln, where Sir Oliver Deyncourt was taken, Nicholaa de Hay (la cuntasse de Nichole de Hay) and gave him the of Dodington with her niece, but he saw that she could not give him and would not marry her niece until she gave him 15/. of her own by charter, so that, if the king took Dodington, he had his sure the death of Sir Oliver, who held the town all his life, John his son for life, and since his death Emun his son has held it. time of King Henry, the township of Dodington obtained an inquest the heir John Deyncourt and the town to enrich (apruer) and his heirs, and before Sir Gilbert de Preston, then justice, and Basset, sheriff of Northampton, came Sir John Deyncourt and the hundred of Wylibrok, where Dodington is, and put it in the of Caresby and Ordelyngberge, which knew nothing of the manor the jury (la duzzeyne) said that Dodington belonged to Deyncourt and ejected the king. The people of Dodington returned king's court and obtained a letter to the sheriff of Northampton, Hugh who held inquest in Eston by Estaunford by a jury (une duzzeyne) hundred of Wylibrok, and by four men the reeves of four towns, who by the treason of Gerard de Caunvile the Norman, and Robert le Dodington was taken away from the king; the said Hugh took away which was never again heard of, so that thus also the king lost ; that the town belongs to the king's demesne is largely shown rolls of the Exchequer. said Edmund and his ancestors increased the rent of Dodington to after the eyre of the justices at Northampton, before whom it was not by what warrant the said Edmund and his ancestors held the he vexed the tenants and demanded other customs than his had received. from Exchequer records relating to the said town are appended.
