Whiteford, co. Devon. Monday before Basset, who held the manors of Whiteford and Colyton Colcombe hundred of Colyton, the fishery of the water of Axe, and all other and appurtenances by the king's gift, died seised thereof, after the manors descended to Alice and Joan, his daughters and whom with their assent they were divided; the said Alice her share a moiety of the said manors, except the hundred and were to be held in common, such share being now called the Whiteford, and being in the king's hand by grant of Peter de Brewese his wife. follows. of the hundred used to be worth 100s. yearly, and now is 40s., because Sir Hugh de Curteney, lord of Colcombe, the other hinders the steward of the king, as lord of Whiteford, from sitting and electing a bailiff ; the fishery of Axe is common to the lords and Colcombe between le Werpol Super le hull and le Flete de moiety used to be worth 30s. yearly, but now is only worth 2s., a weir has been raised and maintained by the said Hugh, so that and other fish cannot pass as they used, and he forcibly hinders fishing on the king's behalf. perquisites of court with two views of frank pledge, which used 40s. yearly, are now only worth 20s., because Sir Gilbert de knight, tenant of a moiety of the land of Shete, parcel of the Whiteford, by homage and fealty and the yearly service of 26s., without warrant, view of frank pledge, amends of bread and and stray ; and Richard de Hewissh, who holds of the said manor of the land of Yardbery, a hamlet and parcel of the manor, has without warrant weyf and stray ; and the said Hugh, tenant of moiety of Yardbery, has done likewise. is a yearly fair at the feast of St. Calixtus the Pope, the moiety whereof yearly value of 10d. [1345.] : Cosham. 31 March. church of Cosham has been impropriated to the abbey of Marmoutier from time beyond memory ; it was not taken into the king's hand July 11 Edward III, or afterwards ; from that date the abbot occupied his proctors, Fulk, prior of Tykeford, and Richard de Chichele, the fellow monk, until the Nativity of St. John the Baptist 15 Edward III, received the fruits thereof in the abbot's name; from that date until same feast in the year 18 Edward III the proctors occupied the church abbot's name, but the said Richard, then prior of Holy Trinity, York, received the fruits by gift of the abbot ; from that date the prior of and William de Lyverich occupied the church as proctors of the until 31 March 19 Edward III, when the king caused it to be seized his hand by virtue of a recovery in his court against the prior of Tykeford ; for the last period alone received the fruits. church is extended at 40 marks and is really worth 44 marks. Thursday week. the feast of St. Martin 16 Edward III 600 Welsh, sent to Brittany service, of whom Edmund Hakelut was leader, were driven by a the island of Sully to a port called Crowenest, and remained in the Sir Randolph de Albo Monasterio islord, for twenty days followthe wind was always contrary ; for the two first days the said Edmund their wages ; for the rest of the time they lived on the goods of the victuals, corn, oxen, cows, horses, mares, sheep, pigs, brazen and woollen cloth, jewels and other goods, which they carried consumed, to wit, of the goods of the said Sir Randolph to the value Robert de Hencastel 10 marks, of William de Faunteston 10 marks, de Tregarun 10 marks, of Thomas Nicol 100s., of Randolph Sage Aunger 100s., of Henry Robyn 40s., and of William atte Vale residue belonging to divers persons unknown. Saturday after St. of St. Michael within Cliderhowe castle was never annexed to church of Whalleye from the time of Robert de Lacy, sometime before the time of King Richard, until Robert de late abbot of Whalleye, acquired it from the present king; the and the convent now hold it annexed to the church. Cestre, sometime parson of both the church and the chapel, held in gross and not as annexed to the church; brother Gregory, abbot of Stanelowe, and the convent unanimously released their chapel, if any, to Henry de Lacy, late earl of Lincoln, by a deed dated on Monday before the Purification, a.p. 1294; after the earl's deed came to the hands of the keeper of Cliderhowe castle and lay treasury among the other muniments all the time of Thomas, late lord of the castle ; after his death it was in the keeping of de Tateham, the king's steward, while the castle and the land of were in the hand of King Edward II; after the death of the it came into the hand of John de Plesyngton, one of the executors who still has it in his keeping unless it has been removed by him.
