Tuesday after St. Hilary. 30 Edward I the king granted by charter to John Hayward over the water of Tweed at Berwick free from farm and secular a bridge should be built. John was peacefully seised of the ferry and the profits thereof years until the town was seditiously taken by Robert de Bruys and de Bruys and David his son occupied the ferry for twelve years until was surrendered to the present king after the battle of Halidon. that time the ferry has been in the king's hand. Hayward and Richard Bernard, his kinsman and heir, who is of the years and more, as the jurors understand, never changed their estate which is of the yearly value of 181. Hayward purchased two messuages in Uddyngate, one from William and the other from William Fort of Malton, in the year I, and was peacefully seised thereof until the taking of the town de Bruys. time of the surrender of the town John de Lyndon held one, which the hands of John his son and heir, and is of the yearly value of ; the other was in the hands of Thomas le Hattere and is now in of Richard de Coventre, and is of the yearly value of 5 marks. Carlisle. after St. Edmund, King and Martyr. of the hospital of St. Nicholas, Carlisle, were not observed as they be for thirty-six years past and more until the arrival of the present because the hospital was burnt and totally destroyed first by the war of Boghan, and afterwards several times by the Scots enemies, the rules could not nor yet can be kept. de Wederhale, sometime warden, the third predecessor of the warden, sold two corrodies to Adam le Colier and Robert del Huk ; his second predecessor, sold three corrodies to Master William Stephen de Aketon, and Robert del Raw, rich men of Carlisle. Ralph demised to William de Morleye, a brother of the hospital, of land called Gimelflat for 40 years at a yearly rent of 11s. Thomas de Goldington, the present master, has neither alienated nor charged the house; the rent of Blamire, to wit 4s., and the Wederhale, to wit 5s., have been recovered by him, after being a long arrear; his predecessors so destroyed the house that on his arrival at his own cost oxen, horses, carts, ploughs, and seed to cultivate in the chapel of St. Nicholas has been continuously observed. has built two houses within the hospital, and resides there so can ; the hospital has in no way deteriorated in his time but is much C. Friday after St. Luke. long since earl of Chester, gave to the abbot of St. Rémy in the diocese the manor and church of Lappeleye in frank almoin, and so the Lappeleye is of the foundation and advowson of the earl of Chester of the king. abbot presents to the bishop a monk, who ought to be admitted, and inducted as prior by him. are there a prior and a monk to celebrate divine service. sent two monks to Lappeleye, Gobert de Lapion and John le with his commission, who took away goods of the priory to the value marks against the will of Baldwin de Spynarle, the present prior. [1335.] escheator took the manor of Rungeton into the king's hand by reason death of the last prior of Briwton, who died on Friday before Christmas, said. 4 : Cicestre. 1 April. priory of Bruyton is not of the patronage of the king or his ancestors, have they had the custody thereof in times of voidance, or received any therefrom ; the prior and convent hold the manor of Rongeton, co. which they had of the gift of the abbot and convent of Troarn in for lands in Normandy ; Roger, sometime earl of Salisbury, gave manor to the abbot and convent in frank almoin; the king and his never had the issues of the manor during voidances of the abbey, after the manor came to the hands of the prior and convent, King Edward IT of voidance of the priory by the death of Richard, then prior, received issues, by what title the jurors are ignorant. manor is held of the king in frank almoin and is of the yearly value of Writ to Adam de Wyleby, escheator in cos. Hereford, Gloucester, Salop, and Stafford, and in the march of Wales adjacent thereto. 4 April 9 Edward IIT. [1335.] : Froucestre. 28 April. de Gloucestre, escheator of King Edward I, took the manor of and the churches of Horselegh and St. Andrew of Whitehurst the king's hand, and levied the issues thereof to the king's use, because manor and the advowsons of the churches are held of the king in chief almoin by the service of prayers. ae MISCELLANEOUS 357 manor of Horselegh is of the yearly value of 101. 13s. 4d., the church of 8/. 13s. 4d., and the church of Whitehurst 101. 6s. 8d. de Peyto the younger, late escheator, took the manor and churches king's hand by reason of the last voidance of the priory of Brywton.
