Whereas Thomas de Bethome and Mary his wife (now deceased, late the wife of William Stapulton), who held parcels of the king's demesne lands and pastures by the city of Carlisle (which parcels . 263 1383-1391, p. 184 ), and the closes of Stonfeld (recte and Barrokfeld, together with Brumgyll, within the of Inglewode, for term of the life of Mary as in right of 1413-1416, p. 241] had granted the premises for life at a farm of 5 marks for the said demesne lands and 100s. for said closes with Brumgyll, surrendered the said letters of Henry V into the Chancery for cancellation to the end the present king should deign to grant the premises to the Mary and to Roger de Bethome, son of the said Thomas, for of the lives of the said Mary and Roger; and whereas on 1436-1441, p. 494), the king granted the premises to the Mary and Roger, to hold in survivorship, rendering 8/. 6s. 8d. at the Exchequer by equal portions at Easter and and taking sufficient wood and underwood within forest aforesaid to make and maintain the hays and palings each of the said closes ; and whereas, although the said confident that he had finally obtained the benefit of the grant, to increase the herbage cut down and removed at his costs some wood and underwood growing upon the lands, and closes aforesaid and made ditches to evacuate the there and to enclose the said lands, pastures and closes, said grant, and the letters patent made upon the same, were nevertheless and annulled by colour of an act of resumpmade in the Parliament held at Westminster 28 Henry VI ; whereas on 2 April 29 Henry VI the king by other letters of the said parcels of the king's demesne lands and and the said closes, with Brumgyll, to the said Roger Easter then next to come for 12 years at a yearly farm of 8/. 6s. 8d. for which answer had been made to the king ; and these letters have been revoked and annulled by colour an act of resumption made in the last Parliament, held at to the heavy loss of the said Roger ; the king now, the advice and assent of his council and in consideration of premises and of the fact that on 19 February 34 Henry VI 149 above], by other letters patent, he committed the keeping the said parcels of the demesne lands and pastures and the closes, with Brumgill, to the said Roger from Michaelmas last past for 20 years at a yearly farm of the 8/. 6s. 8d. for answer had been made to the king and an increment of 8d., and on surrender by Roger of these letters into the for cancellation, has granted the said parcels of his lands and pastures and the said closes, with Brumgyll, the said Roger, to hold from Michaelmas last for 40 years, yearly by equal portions at Easter and Michaelthe 81. 6s. 8d. for which he has made answer to the king an increment of 6s. 8d., maintaining all charges incumbent the said parcels of land and pasture with appurtenances, taking sufficient wood and underwood within the forest aforesaid to make and maintain the hays and palings around each of the closes aforesaid ; any statute, act or ordinance to the contrary notwithstanding.
