Order to the sheriff of York, reciting that on the complaint of Thomas de Greseleye that the master of the knights of the Temple in England has unjustly overburdened his common pasture in Northdichton so that he has more animals and cattle therein than he ought, the king several times ordered the sheriff to cause the pasture to be measured so that the said master should not have more animals and cattle therein than he ought according to his freehold in the town, or to certify the king why he would not or could not execute the order, and the sheriff returned that he could not because the stewards of his county put judgement in respite whether such measurement ought to proceed or not because the master by his attorney brought a charter of Henry III prohibiting the impleading of the master except before the king or his chief justices ; and again ordering the sheriff to proceed to the measurement of the pasture without delay ; and because he has testified in the king's court that the return was not made by his authority but by the county, the king has amerced the county at 100s.
