To the mayor and bailiffs of Sandwich. Whereas the king lately Arnald Garcy and John de Astwait to take into the king's bales of cloth and other merchandise of certain men of Bayonne Spain, which were taken in certain ships of Bayonne coming from and delivered to the mayor and bailiffs by Bartholomew de admiral ot the fleet from the mouth of the Thames towards West, to be kept for the king's use, and to deliver the bales and which those men can show to be theirs, to those men, of king's favour, and to take the remainder to London, to be kept for king's use there; and now Arnald and John have informed the that six bales of Wilham Peres de Lesbay of Bayonne, to wit, of Maubuge and two of Arras, which were in a ship called Vavis of Bayonne, and delivered to William Loveryk, late mayor of to be kept for the king's use, by the admiral, are eloigned William, who has refused to deliver them to Arnald and John, they have repeatedly required him, to do so, the king considerthis to be in his contempt, orders the mayor and bailitis to take upon the premises by inquisition jf necessary, and they find that William refuses to deliver the bales as atoreto compel him with all speed by distraints of his goods chattels, imprisonment and other ways, to restore the bales, the value thereof if they do not exist, having consideration to contempt in this matter and the damages suffered thereby, knowing if they show themselves remiss in the execution of this order, the will punish them as disobedient.
