To the abbot of Cluny. Request that he will nominate brother James Cusancia, prior of Priterwell, and brother John, his brother, prior of of the abbot's order, to the envoys of the earl of Surrey, of the priory of Lewes, now void by the death of John de Monte the late prior, for the rule of Lewes priory, which is one of the noble of the realm, as the abbot, by ancient custom and by virtue of compositions, ought, upon the voidance of the priory being announced him on the earl's behalf and by the envoys or proctors of the priory, to two men of his order for the rule of the priory and to present . 311 to the earl by his letter, and the earl is bound to give his assent to of them, who shall be afterwards advanced to the government of the the king wishing that some one may be created prior who shall be suspicion and shall be useful and faithful to the king and his realm, hoping that the priory will be preserved from injury by the aid of the of the said James and John if they be nominated by the abbot, is desired to write the king an account of his proceedings by the of the presents.
