Order to deliver to Joan, late the wife of William de Grey, as nearest [friend] to the heir of Richard de Grey, the custody of a messuage and fifteen bovates of land in Sandiacre, saving the right of others, as the king learns by inquisition taken by John de Lythegrayns, late escheator beyond Trent, that the said Richard at his death held no lands of the 29 KDWARD I. 441 except the said messuage and land, which he held by the service of 4d. to be rendered to the exchequer and 17s. 4 . to be rendered to the of Nottingham and Derby yearly, and that Richard de Sandiacre held the messuage and land by serjeanty, which were taken into hands of the king's progenitors by reason of the alienation of the without their licence, and were arrented to the ancestors of de Grey at the aforesaid sums, whereby the serjeanty is now into sockage, so that the wardship of the lands that belonged Richard de Grey cannot and ought not to pertain to the king.
