Whereas the king lately at the prosecution of Pelerin Durau, John de Beriis, William de Sancto Paulo, Arnold de Sancto Martino, John de Seynt Cryk, Peter Saus of . 409 John de Seyvaus, and Reymund de Artikelong, merchants of who asserted before the king that they had been robbed of their and wares within the power and dominion of the king of Portugal mariners of the realm of Spain appointed Richard de Bremesking s clerk, together with the said mayor and bailiffs and the of the towns of Portsmouth and Wynchelse to enquire by the oath of those towns what goods and wares of the men of the realm of were in the same towns, and in whose hands they were, and to them to be appraised by the oath of men of those towns, and to them when thus appraised to two men of each of the towns by the of approved and lawful men of those towns, to be kept safely until merchants aforesaid should be satisfied for the goods of which had been thus robbed, or until otherwise ordered, and to certify the of all their proceedings ; and the king learns by an inquisition taken said clerk and by the bailiffs of Southampton that the said clerk into the king's hands by virtue of the said order certain goods and of certain men of the realm of Spain found in the town of appraised at 581. 6s. 93d., and delivered them to John and John le Mercer, burgesses of Southampton, to be kept aforesaid; for which reason the said clerk was ordered to take from Pelerin and the others to answer to the men of Yarmouth others whomsoever claiming right or share in the said goods and saving to Pelerin, John, William, Arnald, John, Peter, John and their reasonable costs and expenses about the prosecution of aforesaid, and to deliver the goods and wares to Pelerin, and the others, to be divided among them according to the quantity damages that each of them has sustained by the said mariners of and nothing has yet been done in this matter, at which the king the king orders the mayor and bailiffs to cause Pelerin, John others to have from the goods and wares aforesaid their costs and which are estimated at 56/. as appears by an inquisition made it and returned into chancery, and to cause the remainder of and wares to be delivered to them upon their finding security therefor in form aforesaid.
