To John Sturmy, supplying the place of William Lengleys, bailiff in liberty of Holdernesse, co. York. Whereas lately at the suit of alien merchants showing the king that whereas they had been by a tempest and contrary winds, with a ship aden with certain and merchandise, to Frysmersh, in that liberty, and the goods taken and occupied by certain men of those parts entering the the king appointed John and John le Cunstable of Halsham, and de Nottel to take an inquisition upon the matter, by which it is that the ship and merchandise were arrested because they were that the merchants were from a land warring against the king, that the goods were loaded in Flanders and the merchants ought to brought them to a city in the lordship of the emperor called Lubyk, that the ship and all the merchants in it are of the lordship of the the king therefore orders John Sturmy to cause those goods be delivered to the merchants to be taken to the said parts for their because the merchants are of his friendship. Whereas the king learning lately that the master and mariners of a ship of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, laden with wheat, barley and other things in that port, put therein a quantity of wool without the king's licence of coket, and intend to take it to parts beyond the sea; the king appointed John de Langtoft, his clerk, to survey the ship, and to arrest it with the victuals, wool and other things found therein without letters of coket or other warrant; and now the clerk has certified that he found no ship of Newcastle in that port, but a ship of Flanders, called le Seighelase, of which Peter de Neweport is master, and that the mariners are of Flanders, and Roger Spicer and Stephen de Hexham, merchants of Newcastle, had 120 quarters of wheat therein, and Roger had 200 wool-fells, and the master and mariners had 9 cloves of wool in 2 pockets, and 340 wool-fells, without coket or other warrant, and that he arrested Roger, Stephen, the master and mariners, and the ship, victuals, wool, and wool-fells, and delivered them to the mayor and bailiffs to be kept, and because the men of Flanders are in the king's friendship, he orders the mayor and bailiffs to cause Roger and the others and their goods and ship to be dearrested, if they shall find security to pay what is due thereon to the collectors of customs in the port of Sandwich, and to take them to Flanders, and not to any parts hostile to the king. By C. To the collectors of customs in the port of Great Yarmouth. Order to permit Walter de Mauny or his attorneys to take 78 sacks, 11 stones of wool from that port to Andewerp,without paying custom or subsidy thereon, provided that the king's own wool shall be sent first to the parts beyond the sea, as Roger de Haveryng of London, merchant, caused 23 sarplars of Walter's wool to be taken to parts beyond the sea, and they were taken there for the king's use, for which the king is bound to Walter in 1567. 16s. 5d., as appears by an indenture made between Roger and Reginald de Conductu, and John de la Pole, supplying the place of William de la Pole, deputed to receive wool there for the king's use, and the king wishing Walter to be satisfied granted that he should take 78 sacks, and 11 stones of wool as aforesaid, the custom and subsidy due thereon being allowed in full payment of the said sum.
